this has been a perennial nag since online upgrade from 7.10 yesterday. it crashed my ubuntu-studio about 5 minutes ago (why, i don't know: i was loading in prboom at the time, not even using it. it also crashed your launchpad site entry-way, too, when i attempted to report the studio crash.)
i had this problem (among several lethal kernel probs) about 3 weeks ago during an aborted upgrade attempt.
keep up the good work. -O.

I scrapped my dual-boot (I had used XP as back up to Gutsy because Skype wouldn't work on Gutsy - problem with SB Live! support.

I installed Hardy from scratch after repartitioning HD.
All went fairly easily, and I even had the audio in and audio out working (that was the sole raison-d'etre for keeing the XP partition). I tested it using Skype and the Skype audio test (I heard the sounds on the speaker, and heard my voice back confirming that audio output worked properly).

That only lasted for a couple of hours. A couple of reboots, and some updates,later, the audio indicator on the bar had a red cross beside it, indicating it was no longer functioning. - seems the system no longer detected my soundcard (not at all).

I did some tests and gathered info...
I have a SB Live! card - and I know that support for it under Ubuntu is iffy.

 Any ideas of why audio input and output worked at the outset, and now does not?

Hi there, I got this bug too, twice, since I had to reinstall by updating from 8.10 alfa 3 to kernel 2.6.27-2 again, since I had a fatal system crash. Plz find 2 screenshots and a crash report in attachment.

I was having the same issue I solved it by running "killall pulseaudio" in the commandline, then installing timidity using "sudo apt-get install timidity". Timidity should then install properly with no errors.

As far as I remember, timidity startup options were set incorrectly in /etc/init.d/timidity (not sure what is the name of the script).

Trying startup options such as:
OPTIONS=”-iA -Os”
loads timidity properly (opening alsa sequencert port as a virtual midi card) and it works with pcm output to PulseAudio.
(last tried this spring on Ubuntu prerelease, with running PulseAudio, so I'm not sure if anything changed since then).

Hope this helps.
