Hi,

It appears as if

ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:874:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave

is the cause of the failure.

It may be related to bug 202089.

Experience the same problem here running the latest upgrade of Hardy.

$ lspci | grep Audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

$ uname -a
Linux octop 2.6.24-15-generic #1 SMP Fri Apr 4 03:48:31 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

Not sure how to progress from here.

The problem seems to be related to <a href=https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/202089>bug 202089</a> indeed.

The following workaround solved the problem for me:

$ killall pulseaudio
$ sudo apt-get install timidity
