Hello!

I did what you suggested, it took me two tries, but I believe I got it right the second time.

The first time I was confused as to what I needed to authorize, but once I'd done it wrong, not authorizing access to reading and changing private data, I saw there was a new message in the terminal window saying I needed to, so I started over and did it that way the second time, and stuff happened.

Once stuff stopped happening, I closed the window. Do I do anything else now?

Meanwhile, another "Update Manager" turned up yesterday, and I tried to let it install the updates late last night, but it gave me a message that it couldn't install them, that I had some obsolete stuff, and needed to upgrade certain bits first. I wrote them down:
update-manager, libcups2, libudev0, python2.6, python2.6-minimal, update-manager core.

I looked through the long list of updates that I'd been sent, and each of these was listed for updating, but I guess they'd have to be upgraded first. I have no idea how to do this.

Could some or all of this be happening because I upgraded to 9.10 without realizing I wasn't already using a version of Ubuntu that was the right version to go from what I had to 9.10? Long after I'd done it, when trying to find why things weren't working, I saw a note somewhere saying you have to go through upgrades one at a time, not skipping any steps, but by then, not knowing that, I'd already allowed the upgrade and now I have no way of knowing what version of Ubuntu I had originally. If it wasn't the right one, 9.04 it seems, then am I doomed forever with dysfunction? It could have been 9.04, but there's no way to tell now. The person I bought the computer from wiped it clean himself and installed what he called "the latest version" of Linux, but I don't know if that automatically would include the latest version of Ubuntu, or is it the same thing? I didn't realize it was important, and even after four months or seeing it, no doubt, every day when I logged in to the internet, I can't remember what the numbers were. I know there was something, but it didn't mean anything to me, so I didn't memorize or even focus consciously on them.

It said, when I tried to report the problem, that I couldn't report the problem. So I took a screenshot of that, thinking it was all I could do. I'm attaching it, if it's of any use to you.

By the way, I re-tested inserting the thumb drive, and sure enough the icon appeared on my desktop, really cute, but when I right click on it, the menu shows all three of these possibilities: Unmount, Eject, and Safely Remove Drive. So my question is, what is the difference between the three, are there different results, and which one should I use. Are different commands appropriate at different times, and if so, which when?

I'm a terrible nuisance to you; I'm starting to be embarrassed by it. I don't know why you're bothering to help me, but I'm very grateful.

I'll attach the screen shot about the updates before I forget!
