Bothers me too.
Found a way to alter the screen's brightness on this page: http://pims-lab.blogspot.com/2009/12/setting-display-brightness-on-samsung.html
sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=FF works for me on a standard install, setting the backlight to the highest level.
