Bug Description

I've bought a Samsung R519 and as all others Samsung fn buttons don't work. I've tried to patch the kernel and I can use fn buttons but even if I see notifications of brightness changing nothing happens on the screen, battery works, wifi not, backlight off not, mute yes out of the box, touchpad out of the box. Ask waht kind of info do you need.

Finally I've solved my problem, now I'll explain briefly steps I did.

- First of all I've recompiled a patched kernel 2.6.31, in particular there's a little change to do in the file /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.31/drivers/input/keyboard/atkbd.c, without this step pressing the brightness button locks the keyboard,
you have to add your model after others Samsung, I've added these lines:

 {
  .ident = "Samsung R519/R719",
  .matches = {
   DMI_MATCH(DMI_SYS_VENDOR, "SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO., LTD."),
   DMI_MATCH(DMI_PRODUCT_NAME, "R519/R719"),
  },
  .callback = atkbd_setup_forced_release,
  .driver_data = atkbd_samsung_forced_release_keys,
 },

- Second step, I've added info about my pc on /usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/30-keymap-misc.fdi
Just a little change, string

      <match key="/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer:system.hardware.vendor" prefix_ncase="samsung">
 <match key="/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer:system.hardware.product" contains_outof="NC10;SP55S;SQ45S70S;SX60P;SX30S;R59P/R60P/R61P;Q210;Q310;X05">

becomes

      <match key="/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer:system.hardware.vendor" prefix_ncase="samsung">
 <match key="/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer:system.hardware.product" contains_outof="NC10;SP55S;SQ45S70S;SX60P;SX30S;R59P/R60P/R61P;Q210;Q310;X05;R519/R719">

- Last step, I gave the command xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL legacy , it's possible to add this command in Sessions.

Now I can control brightness with fn keys and with brightness applet. There's only one little issue, if I set brightness to minimum, screen goes black and it's impossible to revert the situation, I need to switch to the console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and than come back to X.

It would be great if a patch will be placed in next Karmic, it's not amazing recompiling kernel each time.

I have this laptop too and installed Karmic, and I'm having exactly the same kind of issues, only the sound modifier works with the arrows keys, but not the brightness..

I wonder if ubuntu people could manage this things better and without the need of recompiling the kernel we could all have a .deb in backported modules or something that will detect our laptop model, (or a .deb per non-standard laptop) that will tweak your ubuntu detect everything...

Found a way to alter the screen's brightness on this page: http://pims-lab.blogspot.com/2009/12/setting-display-brightness-on-samsung.html
sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=FF works for me on a standard install, setting the backlight to the highest level.

I can confirm that, with an R519, the setpci operations work under 10.04.

Setting /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/DD03/brightness does not (it says it updates: does nothing).

xrandr doesn't work when setting the backlight to legacy:

# xrandr --output LVDS1 --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL legacy
X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)
  Major opcode of failed request: 149 (RANDR)
  Minor opcode of failed request: 11 (RRQueryOutputProperty)
  Serial number of failed request: 33
  Current serial number in output stream: 33

Brightness buttons bring up the notification that brightness is changing, in the top right of the screen, but don't do anything. Nor does "Power Management Preferences".

All of this is with "acpi_osi=Linux" on my command line.

Subject: And its not Jacki Chan.

6-7 years ago, when I was 7 years old, I walked past my brother's room and saw a game in a glass cupboard gathering dust. It was called Kingdom Hearts. I just got my brother's PS2 and didn't have any good games for it, so I sneakily took the Kingdom Hearts. At that time, I didn't understand a single bit of English, so I just and just got to Traverse Town, with the aid of Google Translate. It got a bit boring translating everything, so I left it for a few years. 4 years ago I moved house, and decided to try the game again. Loved it and have been playing ever since.

This story was quite interesting, fuelled by morbid curiosity. Although it dealt with the unpleasant subject of death, in an even more unpleasant way, I felt I should have cared even more for the death of Mrs Day and Fluffy.
I understood it was unpleasant but I wasn't particularly saddened by the loss of Fluffy. Maybe you should add a little bit more, or an aside that makes us care for Fluffy even more. Better yet if Mrs. Day is included in the aside I'd have more feelings for her too.

I've thought it possibly that you do not want to upset the reader to much since the death is so unpleasant. What are your thoughts?

The thrust of most of the posts seems to be about police abuse, and many people in BCND seem to be the exact kind of people you're describing. There's a lot of blanket cop hate too, naturally, because they're swamped in an endless deluge of stories about that abuse.

A lot of regulars on this sub, too, have a stilted idea of what constitutes abuse and/or care infinitely less about police homicides than flimsy provocations.

How about writing some practice customer service questions for yourself?

*When Beth gets to the store, she sees one female customer ahead of her ordering a few complex drinks and sees the female customer ask to buy 10 gift cards for $5. Beth asks you, the register barista, if she can just go ahead of the female customer because she's just getting a brewed coffee.*
