What about using the plymouth-greeter option ?
Only thing left to do would be to let it working also on booting, because on shutdown it works fine.
then just use it with a nice theme :
Why not use a Wallpaper instead of leting plymouth drawing this damn things ?

A Symbol for dreaming are sky, clouds, stars and so on
Now, what about using the Xsplash from Karmic : the one from Xubuntu 9.10 with this kind of lights flying around in the middle of the screen ?
