I want to add the following.
I think this problem is related.
On my Sony viao laptop model VPCF13Z1E with a Intel I7 processor with Ubuntu 12.04.4 amd64 software manager does not see
Ubuntu 14.04.

My machine has the following characteristics:

lsb_release -a gives:
