Just want to add five cents: I am not active user of Ubuntu right now but I faced with the same issue in many other versions of GNOME in other distributions (currently I suffer from this issue in Arch Linux). I suspect that it caused by custom PAM modules which add to authorization process some delays (in my case this module is pam_yubico which waits for user action) but I still do not have a chance to check it.
