Same problem in Sony Vaio VGN-FZ31E
Nvidia GeForce 8400M
Kubuntu 12.10 upgraded from 12.04

$ xrandr

VGA-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
TV-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
LVDS-0 connected 1280x800+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 322mm x 201mm
   1280x800 59.9*+
HDMI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

Have tested driver in official Ubuntu repos and stable and beta official driver from Nvidia.
