I had three more freezes (two yesterday, one today).

The first one occurred about 10 minutes after I used xrandr to switch to a dual-head config. I started doubting if xrandr/radeon driver was at fault here.

The second occurred when I used xrandr. This time I still had an external monitor connected, and I saw a bunch of colourful vertical lines there: http://mg.pov.lt/P6010010.JPG

The third freeze occurred this morning during login. When X starts up and I get a gdm screen, the server uses the largest available video mode (2380x1024), which is the dual-head one. When I actually log in, GNOME automatically switches to the single-head 1024x768 mode (I assume this is the work of gnome-display-properties/gnome-settings-daemon). The freeze occurred during this switch, and I saw another screen full of vertical coloured stripes.

Thankfully the freezes do not occur on each xrandr call, or I wouldn't be able to log in.

The freezes started very recently. I think I had one last week, but I was in a hurry and just rebooted the laptop without investigating, and then forgot about it.

I currently have xserver-xorg-driver-ati version 1:6.5.7.3-0ubuntu7. I do not have a deb of an older version, so I cannot downgrade and see if the problem goes away. On the other hand, this version was released on May 1 (according to the changelog), and I upgraded my Dapper daily during May, and I do not know why I only started having problems recently.
