So to solve the original bug report. It seems to me that there are two tasks to be done:
1. when "style="font-family:'DejaVu Serif'; font-style:italic", make sure that DejavVu-Italic.ttf is used
2. lookup DejavVu-Italic.ttf's 'locl' table when necessary
