With the current configuration, usb_modeswitch seems to do exactly the opposite of what it is supposed to do, it puts my device into install mode (0083). Without usb_modeswitch, my device ends up in non-install mode (1350) and things works fine. I uninstalled the usb-modeswitch and usb-modeswitch-data packages, and it works fine without them.
But when connecting my device to a Windows machine without driver, it ends up in install mode.
There seems to be quite a lot going on in the udev subsystem when you connect a USB device, can there be something else there which manages to take the ZTE Blade out of install mode (which usb_modeswitch then accidentally manage to undo)?
Yes, it's a bit strange.
