John,
I think the main reason why you found this page confusing is that you viewed it from a GNOME desktop instead of Unity, while it included a couple of Unity/GNOME conditionals. To avoid that kind of confusion, please use Unity to check the desktop guide.

Anyway, I committed a change with a couple of minor fixes including removal of those conditionals.
