I just got this bug today when using Update Manager to update to Firefox 3.0.5 on Ubuntu 8.10. After rebooting it wouldn't go away, then I tried the fix suggested by Savvas Radevic:

sudo killall -9 -r firefox
sudo apt-get purge firefox firefox-3.0 ubufox
sudo apt-get install --reinstall firefox firefox-3.0 firefox-3.0-gnome-support

This worked for me!! Thanks Savvas. How did you discover this fix?
