This issue affected me as well. To get around it, I needed to switch to a console, manually kill gdm, switch the xorg.conf to use the vesa video driver, then restart gdm.
As this is well beyond the abilities of less experienced users, it is definitely something that needs to be addressed if you intend to grow the user base to people who could not perform the above.
