Thanks Matt and Hugo! I didn't try removing tex-common, which makes sense.

What worked for me was:

sudo apt-get purge texlive*
sudo update-updmap
sudo updmap-sys --syncwithtrees
sudo updmap-sys
sudo apt-get install --reinstall texlive-base tex-common
sudo apt-get install texlive
