I just had this problem when I enabled

Defaults mail_always

in sudoers. Other sudo commands worked fine, but when doing any variation of 'sudo su -' or 'sudo su $USER', the sytem would echo 'logout' on first keypress.

Could be unrelated, but still gathering information.
