Bug Description

Binary package hint: shotwell

Shotwell includes some previewing features for raw files which seem to work quite well. But it slows down the computer a lot to generate the mimics and eats a lot of disc space. I already found a thread on the subject on the mailing list, to discard the mimics folder :
http://lists.yorba.org/pipermail/shotwell/2010-August/000825.html
But on my computer, I always store my own jpeg files generated from my raw files like this :
photos/RAW/photo1.nef
photos/JPG/photo1.jpg
I do not want to rely on the jpeg mimic or on any other embedded tool to generate the jpeg but have to use dedicated special tools, mainly for picture quality reasons. So, I always have a corresponding jpeg for all my raw files.
In shotwell I can then see all the pictures twice (one for the raw, the other one for the jpeg).

The best would be if shotwell could discard all raw files (menu option, filename filter via command line...). This would solve my issue and the issue reported on the mailing list above.

I have shotwell Version: 0.8.0-1~maverick1

Thanks !

Your suggestion fits into two tickets we're considering: RAW+JPEG support (http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/1772) and using a RAW file's embedded JPEG instead of the mimic (http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/3041), but using the external JPEG as a special-case of an embedded JPEG.

However, there are certain trade-offs with this approach. There's a discussion going on in #3041 about this idea that might give you some idea of what they are.

The ticket for using a RAW file's embedded JPEG is actually http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/1771 , not #3041 as listed in the comment above.

Thanks for your answers. I understand this could be either treated by using the embedded JPEG (which I do not have with my camera), or only display the JPEG if both files are present. But why not just give the option to discard raw files ?
The mimic generated by Shotwell has a very bad quality compared to the JPEG generated with the Nikon tools for my camera. This is of course not a Shotwell related problem, but more generally that there is no open-source software capable to decode the RAW files as well as the Nikon tool does for Nikon cameras. In that case, I'd rather not see the RAW at all under Shotwell.
This is my opinion, some people may share it. A configuration to discard some file formats would be optional, very simple and could make everyone happy, no ?

Best regards,
Julien

To be clear, it sounds like you're asking for an option which would cause Shotwell to ignore RAW files completely. If you select this option then Shotwell would never import RAW files, and if you select this option with an existing library then Shotwell would discard all existing RAW files in the library. Is this what you want?

I'd like to also put my hand up for this feature please.

I'd also like to be able to ignore video file extensions due to their size. i.e. I'm only using Shotwell to import non-video file types.

Thanks!

There's a workaround for this that may work for some folks. If your concern is only ignoring certain types of files while importing from a camera/memory card, the search toolbar may be of use.

While in the import page, hit F8 to make the search toolbar appear (or go to View->Search Toolbar.) To ignore videos, click the Photos button on the toolbar. To ignore photos, hit the Videos button.

RAW is a bit trickier, since the photos button includes both RAW and regular photos (JPEGs, etc.) But you may be able to use the search box on the toolbar for this since it can filter by filename. For example, when importing from my phone I can type ".jpg", without quotes, to see only JPEG images. This lets me ignore both videos and RAW files when importing.

I plusify this ticket because I can't (really can't) use Shotwell if it works with our raws.

We have a folder with all our photos, classified as we want into our subfolders. And we configured Shotwell to follow this folder and import all new files, and update all modifications (with tags inside JPG).

This folder is sync (with btsync or other) with other computers, and with a server for backup.

Our Raws are in the same folder, same classification, etc. But Raws is for *develop photos* and it's OUR job to do that ! We absolutely don't want to have *automatic* ugly JPGs from our Raws, added to our folder and especially then : added to all sync computers !

We want to develop our photos ourselves, export the good ones in JPGs, and only them have to be imported into Shotwell to classify them. Not raws and their *false* JPGs.

Even if there was not the synchronization, we don't want to have false JPGs beside our Raws in our local computer (and yes, Raws must be sorted in the same folder, we don't want to have another folder with all the same classification, it's not usable and maintainable).

That's why we also want to disable Raw support in Shotwell in order to use it (and I want to use it…).

I precise that I don't want a complicated feature : I just want to disable completly the raws importation. On/Off. Just that, and the world will be happy. :D

Absolutely agree. Shotwell becomes virtually unusable if it insists on cataloguing raw files.

I have to move them out of the directory, run Shotwell, and then move them back. Highly inconvenient.

Please include a simple feature for ticking the files you want Shotwell to include.
