Your proposed fix worked.
alt-f2 to get new terminal window
login
sudo systemctl start sddm

Made the desktop come alive.

I did a new sudo apt-get distupgrade but still have to
start sddm manually to get to Desktop.

So seems ssdm bug aferall.
