To fix that, just comment out two lines in two files in /etc/pam.d:
commented line in common-auth: #auth optional pam_smbpass.so migrate
commented line in common-password: #password optional pam_smbpass.so nullok use_authtok use_first_pass
All my 8.04 servers have now this lines commented out. SSH works fine and no more high load average under brute force attacks.
