On further examination, it looks like my problem does occur on other Ubuntu distributions.
Given that it is not tied to any specific distribution or version of java, my problem is possibly due to CGoban3 itself. Perhaps it is deciding to pack as many lines in as possible, and not properly estimating the width of columns that have 'Robot' in the player name.
