Something like this problem affects me too, but I'm not sure what causes it.
The version of java I'm using is openjdk-6-jre, on a clean installation of Ubuntu 10.04. (The problem did not occur with 8.04 or 9.04.) I haven't installed any fonts.
The font looks like it is too big for the space available to it (e.g., descenders from 'g's are chopped off and one column of text runs into the next).
