If you can easily resurrect the vanilla Hardy VM, could you also redo the test and run

 sudo touch /usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9/.autoreg

(or sudo touch /usr/lib/firefox-3.0/.autoreg)

right _before_ step 3 (e.g. before restart)?

Does that auto-fix weave for you?
