For all of you who also suffer from this bug - I am able to connect to wifi with the WICD network manager.

It might not be as fancy as plasma's network manager but it'll probably answer the needs of most of you
install using
sudo apt-get install wicd-gtk
or
sudo apt-get install wicd-kde

see more details in the link, note that you don't have to uninstall your current network manager, i.e., you can skip the
sudo apt-get remove network-manager
command
