For all of you who also suffer from this bug - I am able to connect to wifi with the WICD network manager. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WICD
It might not be as fancy as plasma's network manager but it'll probably answer the needs of most of you
install using
sudo apt-get install wicd-gtk
or
sudo apt-get install wicd-kde
see more details in the link, note that you don't have to uninstall your current network manager, i.e., you can skip the
sudo apt-get remove network-manager
command
