Had a similar issue with a Huawei E122. That is, installing usb-modeswitch fixed my problem as well.

But, mine occurred during an upgrade from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. To clarify, my E122 worked perfectly before the automatic upgrade, but after running it, network manager couldn't detect it, no ppp device appeared but lsusb was still listing it, although as a Mass Storage interface (as you might guess). I presume this is what "Womble" was talking about... but who knows.

I cannot tell you whether usb-modeswitch was uninstalled during this process, but only because I don't know where to look - I would be really happy to provide any log file I'm requested for.

Interestingly, immediately after the upgrade, everything worked fine, it was only after I rebooted, again, later that things failed - although I realise how silly that sounds so maybe my recollection is false, but that's how I remember it :)

For the sake of >20k, perhaps these files should be included as a mandatory part of the upgrade? At least for people with mobile broadband settings? In situations like mine (and I presume Wombles :) my 3G modem is my ONLY source of internet access. If it fails during upgrades, even to figure out what is going wrong using Google, means I have to annoy other people, go to their houses and borrow their connections - let alone when the fix is to download more packages :)

And I realise this has little to do with network-manager, just hope you can pass this on to more appropriate people for me.
