There is an equivalent of Netspeed using indicator-sysmonitor and a script; both working fine (see screenshot (yellow) for details). You can find it – as well as a description how to install it – at http://www.pcurtis.com/ubuntu-unity.htm#netspeed_appindicator
Nevertheless: Netspeed (or an equivalent) should be ported to Unity/GNOME3 to be able to use a native tool.
