I would suggest you put up a test ppa for use in an ubuntu session & see how it shakes out. The sooner the better as currently 17.04 installs are cheap & disposable.
As far as type-ahead, the main attraction wasn't current dir. only, it's that it searched/returned 1st character on exactly where as gnome search does anywhere in the filename exactly. (at least current gnome search in ubuntu session.
Users will miss that if the new search doesn't do, but such is progress.
