I'm also having the same issue on two installs of Ubuntu 22.04. For me it happens when my monitor goes to sleep and locks my session. After entering my password in the login screen the icons turns into three dots.

Sometimes when I click on the icon it turns back to normal but sometimes it doesn't.

I've not been able to reproduce it lock/unlock, but I do reloading the shell.

In such case, I bisected it to this commit: https://github.com/ubuntu/gnome-shell-extension-appindicator/commit/6fa6ee276692e517148c2cba8764114706a20d8f

Can someone please check if applying it (can just edit /<email address hidden>/appIndicator.js) fixes the issue for you?

@Marco: I edited the appIndicator.js file on my machine to reflect your edit. So far (after 30 minutes of using my laptop), the Dropbox icon remains present and its menu functions normally. I tested closing my laptop to suspend and then reopening it, and the icon continues to display as expected. I'll update here if the icon disappears to three dots again after a longer trial period.

I made Marco's changes to /<email address hidden>/appIndicator.js yesterday and have been using my laptop heavily today.

So far, after a full day's work with many laptop closings and openings, the Dropbox icon has displayed as expected. The drop-down menu from the icon also continues to work as expected.

Thanks, Marco, for the apparent fix.

I have also edited the appIndicator.js file as per Marco's edit, and have gone a few days without the three dots reappearing.

Thanks Marco for what appears to be the resolution to three dots replacing the Dropbox icon!
