Users might have blocked access for debian-sys-maint somehow, simply because they don't want the maintainer scripts to have access to the database. I don't think this is an invalid choice, so we might consider giving a warning instead of error in the specific case of access denied.

@Alberto,

Lars and I maintain MySQL packaging in Debian and Ubuntu. Even though we do not yet know how to reproduce it, we think this is a valid bug since there are multiple reports, so Confirmed is the correct status.

Changed in mysql-5.7 (Ubuntu):
status: Incomplete → Confirmed
Changed in mysql-5.7 (Ubuntu):

This is _probably_ a duplicate of LP: #1567612

I got the same error yesterday. I installed mariadb in the past, but forgot about this and then tried to use and install mysql. My solution was a complete uninstall of mysql and mariadb and a clean install of mariadb. Especially the fact that Gerardo tries to connect to a mysql server, but mysql-server-5.7 is not installed on his/her machine makes me think that mariadb might be involed, because I got equal error messages.

Maybe this is related to #1490071

my setup: ubuntu 16.04, amd64, mysql Ver 15.1 Distrib 10.0.29-MariaDB
