I totally agree. What I don't get is that there's simply no logical justification to the current behaviour (at least when "focus follows mouse" is selected), yet they still don't want to change it. Sure, maybe Windows does it like that, but Windows doesn't have "focus follows mouse" either. Two minutes ago, I again accidently typed my ssh password in a newly open window. Fortunately, that window was from a "local" application (thunderbird), but it's only a matter of time before I get screwed by that. Would anyone who disagrees with fixing the problem care answering these simple questions:
1) Why would anyone want newly open windows to take focus?
2) Why would anyone want that to happen when "focus follows mouse" is selected?
3) Why should that even be enabled by default?
4) Why should there be no way to even disable the "feature"?
