Bug Description

After installing the OTA-9 update to my BQ Aquaris 4.5, mp4 video files no longer display in media player. I get a white screen and no video (but the sound plays ok). The videos used to play fine up until OTA-9 was installed.

Is it possible for you to attach the mp4 video (or a link to it) that is causing the problem? Seems to be working ok for me to play mp4 movies

I find I can view mp4 video files created from my BQ Aquaris 4.5, my android phone and my camera on my BQ 4.5 OK. I'll do a bit more digging into the videos that I can't view to try and find out what's different about them (they were included with a Paul McKenna book so I assume I can't re-distributed them, i.e. add to this bug report). I've tried deleting the videos then copying them back to my phone (SD card) in case the files had become corrupted, but still have the same issue.

@Michael: another thing you could try is to edit the video and reduce it to a 5-10 second clip total. See if that clip also does not play. If it does, that means the editor restructured the video to make the decoder happy. If not, you should be able to share that short clip with myself or someone else on the team since it's not the entire intellectual property. Although I'm not a lawyer so this could still be wrong.

I've run avprobe on the videos that are not displaying and notice the following warnings:

[mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2 @ 0x1315320] multiple edit list entries, a/v desync might occur, patch welcome

If I use a later version of HandBrake (0.10.3) to convert the videos, I don't get the warnings with avprobe and the videos display ok on my BQ 4.5 (the originals were created using HandBrake 0.10.0 according to avprobe). The output from avprobe for the non-displaying and the displaying videos are shown below.

Video no longer displaying:

Ok so these seem like questionable video files then. You're able to play these locally on an Ubuntu desktop using Totem? How about on another phone running Android or iOS?

Michael Devenish (mdevenish) wrote :

@Jim: Agreed, the issue looks like a fault in the original videos. However, the videos are working in Totem (videos 3.10.1 on Ubuntu 14.04) and my Android phone (Android 5.0). They had been working on my BQ 4.5 phone for several months, until OTA-9 was installed.

I've tried editing the video to a 5 second clip but this plays ok. The editor does modify the video to make the decoder happy.

Thanks for confirming that Michael. I can't think of anything obvious that would have changed that could possibly cause this. Is there some way I can get ahold of one of these videos for testing purposes after which I would delete them? That's really the best way to know what's going on here. I want to see if it might be something specific to your phone/installation or if it's a general issue.

Sample video downloaded from https://trac.ffmpeg.org/ticket/1183 attached. This gives the same "multiple edit list entries, a/v desync might occur" warning with avprobe that I get with my other videos.

On my BQ 4.5 it shows either a white screen or the initial frame of the video, but the rest of the video doesn't display; the sound plays ok. The video plays ok on totem (videos) and on my android phone.
