I have struggled with this issue during the Raring cycle. I proposed a change to g_date_time_format() - https://bugzilla.gnome.org/687945 - but was was turned down by Matthias Clasen (for reasons I'll never understand). Now there is a pending MP against indicator-datetime instead: https://code.launchpad.net/~gunnarhj/indicator-datetime/days-months/+merge/159214
