I can't really regard this problem as having been fixed. I upgraded Ubuntu 7.10 to 8.04, and had this problem. Of course, I did still have the old (..15) kernel installed, due to not having upgraded (nor booted, for that matter) this machine for many months), but the update system never gave any warning -- it simply hung my system.
At the very least, a warning should be given that you need to upgrade your kernel /before/ attempting the full upgrade.
