The install does has the aforementioned prerequisite, namely the Synaptics 'ultraNav' driver-cum-firmware.

Both installers at issue merely install firmware updates that the installers then prompt one to run, having told the user that the installation is finished; it is pretty confusing.

I managed to get the fix installed, via the Pre-Boot environment, by: installing the prerequisite firmware and driver; rebooting; installing the prerequisite *again*; installing the fix (without rebooting).

How poorly Lenovo treats its Linux users (and it does not design UIs well either).

I hope that the Linux firmware updater (fwupdmrg) will get this update. However, thus far that service does not offer updates to touchpad stuff.

I shall now enable S3 sleep and see whether the fix actually works.
