Testing the same scenarios (X-on-multipath and just-X) where X is ext4 works correctly in all cases. This really looks to be specific to the JFS support somewhere. I'm not sure it's a kernel issue, but it looks like it might be.
I'm doing more testing on a Firestone now, should be sufficiently similar hardware to show the same failure to boot (but successful install) reported earlier.
