The issue seems to be fixed with the latest Ubuntu 14.04.3 kernel:

$ uname -a
Linux quasar 3.19.0-49-generic #55~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 22 11:24:31
UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
