Bug Description

We need to support the realtek bluetooth part that comes with the Realtek Wifi MiniPCI Card ( 8723BE )

the info collect has been done a Clevo W310CZ

Realtek has provided a driver which has been patched to work on trusty/3.13 here :

https://github.com/lwfinger/rtl8723au_bt/tree/51a20d7c07861cbdd7219e54244bb3e38ba55058

This driver replace the current btusb driver and thus might cause different dehaviour with other bluetooth cards.

Yes it has been tested on 3.18 and it's still not working

but I'm not surprised as the realtek support has not been pushed in mainline kernel and I doubt that Ubuntu kernel devs would patch that sort of thing.

What would be the right procedure then ? Push the fix to upstream ? We have everything ready on the github mentionned above.

For now I've created an alpha state DKMS from this github :

https://github.com/EkimiaSAS/rtl8723au_bt/tree/dkms

Which results in a dkms deb but which does not include the firmware.

http://support.ekimia.fr/drivers/Bluetooth/rtl8x/

Also this DKMS overwrite the current btusb which quite dangerous ....

Does the ubuntu project distribute dkms drivers even when they are opensource ?

For now it's the right thing to do it seems.

I'm using Utopics default kernel and I also got wifi working with https://github.com/lwfinger/rtlwifi_new. I even got bluetooth to work with lwfinger's rtl8723au_bt. But when bluetooth is enabled, wifi is not working very well (unless the signals is very good, the connection becomes slow and unresponsive at times). I know that bluetooth and wifi use the same antenna for this chipset, but I'm hoping it's a driver issue and could be fixed on the software level. I would be happy to debug if needed.

To get it work you need to install both rtlwifi_new and BT driver from one place.

If you uninstall both drivers from github and install them from my ppa, they wll work.

Unfortunately it's still not working. I uninstalled the github versions by reinstalling the kernel via Synaptic. I then installed the packages you specified (the 8723BE module is definitely built) and power cycled. Bluetooth devices cannot be found by Gnome's bluetooth settings.

My packages are cleanly removed. Not like github versions. They overwrite package files and blacklist modules. That's not good.
I can review blacklists manually and also module associations.

To get it clean is better to install a new kernel.

Yes, I agree. I'd much prefer to be able to install a package instead of installing the drivers from github. However, if they don't work, they don't work. I can provide debugging logs if you tell me what would help, but apart from that, I'd rather have the functioning hardware.

I've upgraded to a 4.2.0 kernel, Bluetooth isn't even recognised now.

The "Bluetooth: hci0: Failed to load rtl_bt/rtl8723b_fw.bin" line in dmesg looks suspicious, but I have no idea how to fix it.

I was previously using Troy Tan's firmware, but my understanding is that reinstalling linux-firmware and a new kernel should completely revert whatever it does.

Jason,

If you installed a driver from the git repository, you need to remove it.
Kernel 4.2 supports this adapter by itself.

You need to install firmware that has a file for this adapter

wget http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux-firmware/linux-firmware_1.156_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-firmware _1.156_all.deb

I presumed that reinstalling linux-firmware and installing a new kernel would do this. Is that correct?

I'll give the linked firmware package a try, thanks.

You need to report a bug to the kernel bluetooth maintainers, since
they claim to support these devices.

Using linux-firmware _1.156_all.deb I get a slightly different outcome. Now when I run "dmesg | grep -i blue" after boot, there are no results. After I use Gnome's bluetooth settings window to try to connect to a device, the log contains:
