Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.12 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Sorry for the delay, I didn't have internet for a couple of days. I'll
try today to update BIOS and post the results.

Thank you very much

I've updated the BIOS without any changes regarding bluetooth.

The output of "sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s

I've tested with latest Ubuntu, still not working. To sum up, with 3.11
or 3.12 kernels the bluetooth can be turned on and off and its
visibility can be changed but it doesn't detect any other device nor can
be detected. With 3.13 kernels the device doesn't show in the
application (all menus are disabled).

<email address hidden>, thank you for testing Trusty. Did this problem not occur in a release prior to Saucy?

It's a new computer, Saucy was the first system installed. I will try
with a live 12.04 and let you know the results.

I tested bluetooth using a live disk of Xubuntu 12.04.2 with kernel
3.2.0.52. Initially it shows the bluetooth on, but when I try to set up
new device I get the message "No adapter found". If I turn bluetooth
off, I can't turn it on anymore afterwards.

<email address hidden>, the issue you are reporting is an upstream one. Could you please report this problem through the appropriate channel (I would check in with linux-bluetooth) by following the instructions _verbatim_ at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/kernel#KernelTeam.2BAC8-KernelTeamBugPolicies.Overview_on_Reporting_Bugs_Upstream ?

Please provide a direct URL to your post once you have made it so that it may be tracked.

Thank you for your understanding.

I'm sorry if I created a mess. I tried to follow the instructions in the
link you sent me to the best of my knowledge. I did send a mail to
<email address hidden> before posting on bugzilla. If there is
any way I can provide useful information please let me know. If not,
again, I'm really sorry for wasting everybody's time.

<email address hidden>, thank you for your comments. Given the direct URL is now available in the Bug Description, you are welcome to click "Hide comment" for comments #18-22 to eliminate redundancy.

Despite this, this issue appears to result from a firmware issue as per your BootDmesg.txt:
[ 8.444950] Bluetooth: can't load firmware, may not work correctly

Hence, without making any further modifications of your install, could you please post the output of the following via terminal:
apt-cache policy bcmwl-kernel-source

I tried the mainline kernel 3.14.1 from here - http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/, and the result is even more disappointing, the Bouetooth is not even recognized, unlike the Ubuntu 14.04 default kernel that acts just like the OP said. I have the same laptop - Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E 531, with Broadcom Corporation BCM43142 802.11b/g/n (rev 01) WiFi/Bluetooth adapter.
