Thanks for your feedback. I did confirm your workaround does provide a graphical login screen for me as well:

CTRL+ALT+F1
sudo service lightdm restart

If GDM works too then maybe this is a lightdm bug?

I did try to install the mainline kernel but got errors... (see errors.txt)
