Quite often this boot problem is because you have a JMicron controller, though I cannot tell for sure in your case. There is a critical fix for this controller bug in the Feisty daily builds: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current. Please try the appropriate ISO and report the results.

The Intel DG965Ry motherboard definitely has a JMicron IDE controller. Google for 'DG965Ry jmicron' and you will get many hits.

If you download the latest Feisty beta your problem should be solved; try going to http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current then download the feisty-desktop-i386.iso and burn it to a CD. This LiveCD should work. If you don't know how to burn an ISO to a CD, please visit:

I still cannot boot my Acer Travelmate 270 laptop with the latest daily
builds and the new kernel. It does not have a jMicron controller. The
symptoms are the same as those of the jMicron bug, but clearly the cause is
different. Is there another bug report that is handling this issue because
I've noticed that most bugs related to boot problems are being closed and
marked as duplicates of the jMicron one when it is not necessarily the case.

Thomas: I'm unable to boot so how can I get the output of those commands?
Does the initramfs BusyBox shell support those commands?

Thanks.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!
