Same problem with Ubuntu AMD 64 alternate iso from 22/3/2007.
Running Gigabyte GA-m59SLI-S5 with
AMD64x2 and
4 SATA drives no IDE
Was able to to start Rescue a System option from boot disk using noapic option but even though it looked like it had installed the system it will not boot from hard drive.
The Kubuntu Herd 3 live disk booted the system happily using the noapic option.
