I have a very similar issue. Same ubuntu version 16.04, fresh install.
Using Nvidia driver strange colours appear.
Using xorg driver after clicking ubuntu search menu the system completely freezes. Must reboot after that.
This is what I see in syslog (dossier /var/log) at time of issue:
