Here is the output from dmesg when cheese fails on my laptop under KDE. It starts with

[613591.929752] uvcvideo: device USB2.0 Camera requested null bandwidth, defaulting to lowest.
[613591.930239] cheese: page allocation failure. order:5, mode:0x8000

and gets worse :)
