Mouse wheel does not work when indicator is selected

The slider can be moved via the mouse wheel once the mouse is over the slider. I can see your point though.
Will consult the designer to clarify preferred behaviour.

Since tooltips are now removed, the only way to see the volume with some more precision is to open the menu, so it's not a bad idea to make the wheel work when the menu is open.

This is not something we can fix. When you have a popup window (which all menus are) then it's going to be blocking events from arriving to other windows.

From discussion with Cody: Fixing this is dependent on fixing GTK menus generally to bubble up to their parent any input that they don't handle specially themselves. It's the same basic problem as bug 324836 and bug 366193.

As an intermediate solution, how hard would it be to (1) automatically give focus to the slider when the menu is open and (2) make the wheel work for the slider regardless if the cursor is over it or not? I'm guessing (1) is easy, since the Me Menu does this for the microblogging text field. But I don't know if (2) is possible.

Going to close this now because as Matthew has pointed out the problem lies within GTK and not the indicator.

Are you sure? If I'm not wrong in the old volume control this was possible.

Probably because the old control did not use a menu. It's the menus, in particular, who are very focus-greedy.

Please stop closing this as Won't Fix or Invalid. The current behavior doesn't follow the specification, it's one of the most commonly cited problems with the sound menu, it is fixable (as demonstrated by the old volume control), and we have people who can fix it. If it can only be fixed in GTK, then mark it as affecting GTK and link it to the relevant GTK bug report.

This bug is an upstream one and it would be quite helpful if somebody experiencing it could send the bug the to the people writing the software. You can learn more about how to do this for various upstreams at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream.

If it doesn't work when using a menu, then don't use a menu.

When running gnome-volume-control-applet an applet appears that works correctly. Why not build on that? Having the volume control in the notification area is illogical and impractical anyways.

I have tried to reproduce this using 12.04, with indicator-sound 0.8.0.0-0ubuntu3 and scrolling while over the sound icon works both when the sound menu is open and closed, so I am setting the ubuntu task as Fix released. Feel free to reopen if it still doesn't work for you in the development version, Precise.
