They do look like aspects of the same problem . . . a problem that is "unique" to ubuntu's handling of grub, which for most single boot users it "doesn't matter" . . . but for multi-boot users . . . it does. Just means to me that "ubuntu" flavors are being whittled down in number . . . . There are other options to choose from, options that let grub do what it needs to do, etc. : - (
