System > Administration >Services (services-admin) missing

Someone recommends me "ebox", but it install too many packages and no option to config Services at all.

Maybe this option is hidden.

System--->Preferences-->Main menu

Under Administration, is the Services option checked?

Thanks for the report. The tools was removed on purpose, but we're currently trying to fix it so that it can come back soon.

This bug is not a duplicate of #433701. #433701 requested the Services tool to be removed, and was "fixed".

This bug is about "Services" being gone, a side effect of important changes in that part of Ubuntu, and should be left open until another tool is inplace, or marked "wontfix" accordingly. Essentially the GUI tool became broken in Karmic and only command line will work for starting/stopping services for 1 cycle as I understand it.

@Juan Carlos see #433701 for more information on why Services was removed.

OK, I should have made it a duplicate of bug 435935 instead. My point was to link this bug to the other one since the rationale for removing services-admin is there. But if you prefer, I can point to the bug where the work is going on.

I did not change the problem we're dealing with on this report, I merely changed the title to something more developer-oriented. I don't think we should always adapt the description to the most basic POV, because then people aware of the fact that services-admin is not even installed won't even find the report. Anyway, the goal is to fix this - and I will suffer from the duplicates that may appear more than you do, so don't worry...

I'd like to know if packagers of the gst have decided on a policy to apply here.
@Chris: do you think that should go in a SRU now that the support is in the stb?

It's too late to add this in for release now, seeing as it would be part of the ISO. Adding new applications to users desktops as a SRU isn't really appropriate either, especially seeing as it won't really have had any extensive testing yet. I think this will have to wait until Lucid now.

That won't happen, as explained by Chris in the previous comment. It's far too late now, that will be for Lucid.

I can't believe Lucid shipped as an LTR with no tool to manage system services. This is a huge omission. Still hope to see it resolved some day...

This is completely unacceptable. I just did a fresh install of 10.04 and now I can't print. I get errors instead, am told to enable cups, but I CAN'T because the ability to do so ("services") has been taken away.

So now I can't print? or is there a command to enter in terminal to do so? Because this is just not acceptable at ALL.

Same bunch of problems with 10.04.
1. Cups did work upon installation as well as sharing and sharing via Samba. Next day is dead.
In the troubleshoot wizard first suggestion is: Enable Cups via System->Administration->Services
2. No such a link on menu.
Manually from a terminal: sudo services-admin (nothing happens)
gksudo services-admin (something starts and collapse immediately )
sudo /etc/init.d/cups restart (cupsd: Child exited with status 1!
                                                                         [ OK ]

Forgot to add, on
System->Preferences->Main Menu->Administration
there is no option for Services.
Hope that there is some way out of this ?

sudo service cups start (will be reset on next boot)

For shame. If the reason this was removed was b/c it didn't work well with upstart, then fixing it should have been part of moving to upstart. Period. Just ran into this when the latest set of updates disabled cups. Went looking for services admin and...lo and behold, there's nothing there! Very poor form to have gone LTR without something in place. Doing service --status-all is no substitute for a dashboard which gives much better visual feedback on the status of the various services and conveniently allows me to change those statuses.

I have just been bitten by this as well and couldn't agree more.

I too would like a graphical services manager on 10.04 LTS.
