This problem is because the primary monitor (the one with the "Activities" top bar and the docker) when the two are connected isn't the one at the left.
Until this is fixed, there are several things that you can use to mitigate this bug:
- you can keep the icons in the monitor at the left
- you can rearrange your monitors to make the one to the left primary one
- If you are using a laptop with an external monitor, you can go to Settings->Monitor, choose the "Single screen" option and select your external monitor: this way, when you connect the external monitor, the laptop screen will be disabled, and when you disconnect it, it will be enabled and the icons will be exactly where they were.
