I think that button showed up in Karmic. I personally found it pretty confusing. Of course it is a simple button that just calls the save_session function, but it doesn't fit into any sort of normal user workflow, as far as I can see. I agree that this went from bad to worse, and I took the appearance of that button (along with the lack of upstream response) as a sign that this bug will not be fixed any time soon.
FWIW, I would still go my route for a solution; it is basically the same as the workaround. One exception, I would also get rid of the button too.
