More info: after several tries, with only the Unity desktop running and letting the machine sit for approx 20 minutes with the lid closed, the screen kept flickering between the unlock screen and the blank desktop. I ran a ps -eaf from a virtual termial and saw a line related to the lock screen, but did not write down the command for the process (will try to duplicate it again and capture that.

It too my unlock password, and it stopped flickering and went to the blank desktop, and after killing gnome-screensaver and Compiz I had to reboot the machine (via init 6).
