Additional note: Switching to the Blank screensaver did not make a difference, though it seems to be correlated to having the lid of my laptop closed for approx 20 minutes, and it is more noticable if I have things running onscreen when it happens.
Manually killing gnome-screensaver and compiz doesn't seem to make a difference; nothing short of a full reboot seems to bring it back to normal. Haven't tried it with just the blank Unity desktop.
For now I've just disabled the screensaver until I get word that this is fixed.
